Past Project:
Word Association
January 2019
Context:
A side project for my B IMD 362 class challenged me to come up with art (and code to match) that would be a interactive design., where the user would input one of the phrases "Points", "Lines", "Rhythm", and "Balance", and the application would show or hide the corresponding art piece.
Reflection:
I started with Point, the one with the three points; I developed an understanding that 'point' can just be as simple as a 'where' and a 'size'. And with a large, medium, and small circle, I made the Sun, the Earth and the Moon! The other mini-arts were also a fun little challenge, so check out my thoughts on each of them in the slideshow.
My Conceptual Art
My personal favorite out of the bunch: I used the line graphic effects to play into the rising rays at the top right. Also, every line point is connected to either a corner, halfway mark on the side, or the center: a mathematically simple piece. | This is essentially the same as the uncolored version, but the colors make the abstract image take solid shape. I still like the way I used the colors, but it now seems very cartoonish. |
---|---|
The first one was in concept the hardest, but I played with two big points until I got a ratio that reminded me of the Sun and Earth. So, I added a new smaller point to match, and arranged them to pleasing ratios. | I started off with a simple balance between the Moon and Sun in the top left and bottom right. Then to try giving more balance to the piece, I added stars and clouds to the middle top and bottom, which leaves the empty space on the upper right and lower left to balance each other out too. |
At first, I liked the idea of using multiple repeating shapes like this, but then once the "Sun" continuity idea developed, I quickly redid this piece. | This was the hardest for me to come up with an idea that matched the rest of the works I did. I ended with repeating the basic circle shape and isosceles triangle shape, which I think do a passable job at conveying rhythm |
After doing the Lines and Point and Balance pieces, I realized I had three suns in the corner, with a heavy emphasis on the diagonal cutting line. So I changed the last piece to match, and now it looks like a rhombus in the center! | An early set of images |
The Digital Application
This is what the app looks like: the user enters a given word, presses the button, and that image either appears or disappears! | The code behind the app |
